Spam Takes a Back Seat in eMail's Future
As email grows as a business and communications tool,
so do the obstacles to maximizing its value. According to
research from META Group, the buzz around email spam
will remain in the spotlight, but ultimately the biggest
concern over the next five years of email evolution is likely
to be reliability.
"During the next four years, email will unquestionably
become more deeply entrenched, more valuable and
therefore more critical to the well-being of the organization,"
says Matt Cain, VP with META Group's Technology Research
Services. In fact, previous META research finds that 80 percent
of business people believe email is more valuable than the
telephone for daily business activities. "By 2007, email priorities
will have changed dramatically from existing concerns such as
spam blockage and policy enforcement, to a focus on stability
and security."
By 2007, META predicts that stability will be the prime concern
for businesses, as companies need to adapt their infrastructure
to be 100-percent reliable. Following stability, filtering techniques
and software will help keep spam and other security/hygiene
problems at bay. In addition, email centralization, mobile email
access and mailbox overload are all topics that will need to be
addressed to ensure email continues to be a successful business
instrument.
